Grocery Store Gardening
Ever wanted to start a garden, but thought “I don’t have room” or “I don’t know where to start”? This workshop is perfect for you. We’ll go over common ways to propogate, save seeds, and even re-grow food from store-bought and kitchen scraps! No more hunting for expensive seeds and finding room to build huge raised garden beds. This tutorial will help any aspiring green-thumb, whether you live in a house with a yard, or a thirtieth floor apartment with no balcony. We will also go over some very simple and powerful at-home fertilizers you can use, made for free from kitchen scraps, for a full permaculture-level closed-loop and zero waste system.
Starting from what you already buy from the grocery store makes sense on so many levels – for one, it’s food you commonly eat, so you won’t spend time growing something you’re not sure you’ll like. For two – you’ve already bought the food, let’s stretch that dollar and get AS MUCH food from that purchase as possible, right? For three, you learn very quickly and *from experience* what works and what doesn’t – and the stakes are low, because chances are, you’ll be headed back to the store soon. This will give you a much more hands-on education to growing (and we retain information better and for longer when we actually do the thing), from right inside your home, without ever having to invest in expensive gardening equipment, space and materials. That way, if you ever decide to commit to a full on garden, you’ll have practical skills and experience under your belt, and you won’t have to start your investment from square one.
You won’t be feeding yourself year-round exclusively from a kitchen windowsill propagation station, but at the very least, you’ll be getting your money’s worth, growing food that’s more nutritious and flavorful than most store-bought, plus learning and having fun all along the way. This is also a great project to do with children, all ages love to see the sprouts, watch the growth and get their hands in the dirt.
