Before There Was Money (An Intro to Anarchist Anthropology)

Most of us can agree that there is something deeply wrong with the world today, and that many of the problems we face have something to do with an unjust economic system.

There are many different ways of framing the problem, but most will agree that banks are a root cause of much of our political, social, and economic woes.

However, it is difficult for many to imagine a world without banks, because banks issue money. Although it is exceedingly difficult to imagine how a civilization as complex as ours could function without money, the fact is that money has not always existed, and there have been complex societies in which money was unknown.
This workshop will look at several non-monetary societies, including the Haudenosaunee of the Iroquois League and the Wet’suwet’en of the Pacific Northwest.

It will draw ideas from the work of David Graeber, James C. Scott, Marcel Mauss, Richard Wrangham, Sarah Hrdy, and Pierre Clastres.

It will be based on the unfinished “Before There Was Money” series written by Crow Qu’appelle and published by Nevermore Media.
